This project, initiated and directed by Peter Slemon at the Jacobs School of Music is designed to extend the Thesaurus Musicarum Latinarum and to continue the endeavor of capturing all texts on music theory and aesthetics in electronic form. Traités français sur la musique focuses on major treatises written in French, allowing them to be browsed, and searched. It will eventually comprise all relevant manuscript and printed materials written in French from the Middle Ages through the nineteenth century.
In 2015, the software operating the original search utility was the object of a malicious cyberattack, and the website had to be shut down. In 2017, the website was restored to its original layout and functionality with a new search utility. This is the present website. In 2019, redevelopment of the project has started with the goal of making this part of a new searchable archive of historical music theory texts in the vernacular languages.
For further information about this website, its current scope and content, please consult the Introduction to Traités français sur la musique. For more information about the future of this project, email chmtl@indiana.edu.
